Biographical Information

Dr. Schoen has been working in the mental health and substance abuse fields for the past 25 years. In addition to clinical and community-based counseling, psychotherapy, and consulting, he was trained in organizational development, leadership and management assessment and coaching, and work team development at Personnel Decisions International (PDI) in Minneapolis from 1998-2000. He has acted as a consultant for non-profits in the Twin Cities area and coached top leaders and teams as well as led organization-wide interventions.

Working from a resource-focused frame, Dr. Schoen helps clients quickly put ideas into action while assessing what they’re good at doing without ignoring whether what they’re doing is any good. He replaces the repair metaphor with an integral and developmental/life-long learning and exploration frame, utilizing arts-based learning whenever possible. Dr. Schoen draws on clinical experience with youth, adults, families, and people with disabilities as well as consulting with organizational leaders; thus, he’s a clinician with organizational acumen, sensitive to workplace issues, and he practices in organizational contexts functioning as a consultant and coach, while retaining clinical acumen. A common example of this integrative approach is consulting with providers of institutional care while providing counseling to their residents.

Areas of special interest for Dr. Schoen include the developmental themes and challenges for organizational leaders and for parents; often, clients seeking parenting consultation and family counseling also face challenges as leaders and managers at work. Of course, the reverse is also true: family and parenting challenges are sometimes identified by clients in organizational settings. Therefore, clients appreciate how Dr. Schoen helps them identify how their strengths in one area apply to the other as well as how their developmental challenges play out at home and at work. Dr. Schoen’s ability to speak the language of both worlds without being limited to either builds rapport quickly and enhances the impact of the work together.

More broadly, Dr. Schoen’s study of adult development, spirituality, mind-body healing, and integral studies inform his interventions. Meditation, mindfulness during intense exercise, rhythmic entrainment, and ecstatic movement are further examples of the diverse resources he brings to the table.
