On Being A Secular Theologian

On Being A Secular Theologian by Robert Terry Dr. Robert Terry's last book is a further development of his internationally acclaimed leadership theories and is, as well, his spiritual memoir.

Bob first developed his Action Wheel leadership framework in Authentic Leadership: Courage in Action. He expanded on that framework and theory in Seven Zones for Leadership.

In On Being A Secular Theologian, Bob tackles the challenging topic of spirituality in leadership and, as well, addresses tough ethical dilemmas.

This highly personal book was written as Bob faced his own greatest challenge of dealing courageously with ALS--Lou Gehrig's disease.

Leadership Choices

Leadership Choices by Robert Terry From Zone Leadership, Bob Terry offers a hands-on exercise to complete as he debates the choices we make in defining what the term “leadership” means to each of us. Each advocate in this complex field of study seems convinced that her or his perspective is the necessary truth. You will realize the choices you have made, and acted upon, possibly without even knowing they were choices. As you go through this exercise, Bob uses no modifiers for the term, leadership—not effective, hoped-for, creative, good, bad or ugly leadership, just leadership. As you complete the exercises you find here, I think you will be stunned and intrigued about all the choices inherent in defining leadership itself.

Metaphors

Leadership Metaphors by Robert Terry What is at stake in understanding our metaphor? Why are metaphors so central to leadership?

Distorting a metaphor destroys its promise, limiting and misdirecting action. Out of the millions of possible metaphors, only a few are broad and deep enough to reveal highly significant connections among all the experiences of life, sustain attention over time, and inspire fruitful investigation into reality.

No one metaphor, however, exhausts reality. Metaphors reveal as well as conceal, bringing certain aspects of life and policies for action to the forefront of our attention and disguising others. This essay explores leadership and metaphors in detail, identifying six metaphors that are commonly used as frames for understanding life, and relating the metaphors to action theory and ethics. Bob Terry also shares his methods for teaching metaphorical vision.

Seven Zones For Leadership Manual

Seven Zones Manual by Robert Terry Companion to the Seven Zones For Leadership book. Bob Terrys says: "imagine a line in front of you. On the left end of the line is a world that is knowable and fixable. In the center is a world that is understandable and interpretable. And at the far right is a world that unknowable and unfixable.

Do you think leadership would be different in these different worlds? Of course. Yet very few current writers on leadership explore deeply the connection between the worldly context and leadership action." Two notions, a question and a concept guide this exploration. The question is, “What is really going on?” The concept is authenticity.

The first triggers and propels the inquiry and the second sets the standard of the inquiry into leadership. Together, they constitute the heart of the theory and take our understanding of leadership to places few go. The standards for authenticity shift by zone; the haunting question never disappears.

On Being White

On Being White by Robert Terry Bob Terry addresses the question: "What does it mean to be white today?" He offers this, a 30 page summation of conclusions derived from a decade of dedication to answering that question. He states that when whites first confront the meaning of their whiteness, a consistent pattern emerges. First, there is the blank stare: "I never thought of it." After some reflection, they lay out a second series of responses that list the advantages of being white: easy mobility, freedom of choice, membership in a majority culture, preferential treatment. Rarely do respondents suggest anything negative about being white.

His profound conclusions offer key insight into whiteness—an insight that has deepened in its implications over the years. He states that to be white in America is to not have to think about it. Except for hard-core racial supremacists, the meaning of being white is having the choice of attending to, or ignoring, one's own whiteness.

Metaphors and Racism

Metaphors and Racism by Robert Terry Metaphors shape our perception of how the world really works and the way it ought to work. When nations set domestic and international policy based on unexamined metaphors they can cause great harm and, in fact, compound the problem. We need multiple perspectives on racism to make the complex subject matter available to us and to see that all of these perspectives are needed. Different frameworks highlight certain aspects of the complex phenomenon of racism.

Faith, Racism and New Possibilities

Faith and Racism by Robert Terry Faith based organizations and educational institutions are committed to serve God, to live authentically and to focus on and exhibit leadership in all of their actions. Anything that derails authentic action requires and demands attention. Racism derails and requires leadership’s attention and action. Sometimes the derailment is up front; sometimes it is behind the public person or organization.

The tough challenges are two-fold. First to know and understand what racism is and how it manifests itself organizationally and personally. Second, to figure out what can be done that actually works to confront and eliminate the derailment and restore or create a faith based authenticity.

Leadership Reflections and Learnings

Leadership Reflections by Robert Terry

Bob Terry shares a series of reflections and learnings that challenged his own understanding of, and practice of, leadership as an educator and leadership architect. Hopefully, these insights will stimulate your own inquiry and deepen your wisdom so you make thoughtful adept choices in your leadership. These reflections are not just targeted toward executives. Bob was a great believer that leadership, while often linked to positions, is not reducible to position. Leadership is possible for all of us at any time. Three questions are pondered: Are we ready for it? Are we prepared to do it? Do we have the courage to make it happen?

Ethics by Robert Terry Ethics is essential, even intrinsic, to leadership. It is not enough to assert the importance of ethics and leave it at that. Bob Terry’s definition of leadership sets the stage for who may be considered a leader. We ought to be able to define leadership in a way that is “intellectually and morally defensible.” There is an ethical imperative in the inquiry itself.

What is especially crucial is that, if ethics is not perceived as essential in leadership, it will continue to be ignored or included in leadership programs solely for idiosyncratic reasons—the instructors interests, the culture’s latest fad, or the participants’ whims.

Only what is perceived to be essential in leadership is always included. Even when ethical leadership is included in a leadership program, all too often key ethical principles are not identified, evaluated, or placed in a useful relation to each other. Urging ethical behavior is not the same as thoughtful wrestling with ethical principles or problems. More is required of us as teachers than a peripheral nod to ethical thinking.
