Coaching: one coaches for success. An operating team is struggling to be more effective in its work. A baseball player wants to improve in the sport. Coaching centers on the client and outlines processes to release her/his gifts and insights for success in work and life. Coaching is hands on, concrete and task oriented.
Mentoring: one mentors for significance and satisfaction. An operating team is struggling about whether it wants to remain in the health profession. A baseball player questions the importance of baseball as a sport worthy of commitment. A mentor will assist you to wrestle with who you are and what is important to you. Mentors bring wisdom to the table, a depth of understanding and years of experience. It is harder to "hire" a mentor because the relationship is built over time, based on trustworthy relationships.
